Thanks, I myself am looking for a "reasonably priced scanner" and found your post. I have an old Visioneer 8100 but doesn't look like it works under Linux. I'm enjoying Ubuntu 10.04 and will order the V30 from newegg.

The scanner itself is reasonably fast. The slow part is flipping the pages of the book, lining it up, taking a preview, setting the clip borders, scanning at full resolution, piping the output into the OCR software, and correcting the OCR errors.

Nice article. Reassuring to known that the Epson V30 will work with ubuntu. But, how fast will it scan? If you're scanning whole books...?

There is a proprietary solution to a large number of scanners to work on linux.
It's VueScan, from Hamrick Software.
